The Great Divide
Leaving is just a casualty of reason,
When you’re breathing shallow beneath the weight of what we don’t know.
And we can’t go much further if we don’t create some oxygen tonight,
But the air is thin inside.
So leave it—just let it pass away with seasons,
’Cause you need this reflection.
The troubled torch of introspection and her lessons
Turn warmer when you turn to talk to all the things they burn.
I just wanted you to learn.
’Cause it isn’t something we can change;
It isn’t something simple we can while away with easy talks.
It’s something that we had, and then we lost.
And on and on it goes, a tired song on a rusty radio,
Between the channels of what we say we think we want,
And where we go.
And if I filled your lungs with something more than breathable,
Breathe it in & out, in & out, and move along.
And in the morning, I will turn around to take it in—
Gotta let you go… gotta let you go on.
So thank you for the golden times.
And thank you for the softened-cornered still frames in my tired mind;
I will pull them out and dust them off in time.
And when you’re off to bed, remember how we led
Our certainties into The Great Divide,
And I loved you still, but I couldn’t make it right.
